The Shuffleton Factory Five Racing Cobra Website

August 8,
Well, it's been a while, but progress has been good. I've spent every night this week working on wiring. I've setup 9 relays to handle all the switches. I've already broken one of those british switches just trying to remove a wire. It's taking so long just because I've been trying to hide all the extra wires in the harness, as well keep all the extra wires removable like the harness itself. Been a bunch of splicing. I hope to order more wire clips tomorrow to finish up organization. I just have a small bit of front wiring to do and once the clips are here I should have more time for pictures.
Right now all the gauges are in place, temporarily, Extra wires I had to run included.

Electric Fuel Pressure Gauge.
Front Cobra Fans.
Power to Radiator fan.
Ground for on/Off switch for radiator fan.
T-rex wiring.
Accessory  power
Rich/Lean Gauge

We are making a temporary switch dash right now until we are closer to install the transmission tunnel. And if you have been reading up on your manuals, will still be quite some time from now. We are making a panel to go from under the dash down to the transmission tunnel. Here we will house our switches. If I can get a good couple nights of work done this week, I hope to have the bulk of it done for the weekend and hope to take her out for a spin!

We hooked up the pipes the other day, temporarily of course, and it sounds awesome! Let me tell you, if the sight of the car doesn't attract enough attention, the pipes sure will!

I'll let you know on our progress later this week.

I've worked feverishly over the week 90% of Saturday and about 4 hours today, and it finally happened. The ceremonial trip around the block! What a nerve racking experience!

A little back ground to how this happened. Wiring. Dad had mounted all the gauges in the dashboard. He also made up a temporary wood panel to hold the switches we are going to place on the transmission cover to be flush with the dash, kind of a center section where most people would put a stereo or such. I ran almost all the wiring for the switches and dash this weekend, I had to order a few more switches from Finish Line. Gauges I setup almost permanent, less we forget the gauges will have to come back out when we put the leather on! Only gauges I was not going to have ready were the boost gauge, still needing hose, Fuel pressure, new electric type, and the fuel/Air ratio gauge, lot more wiring to do still. All the hook ups worked great during testing except the dash lights don't work and the Oil temp gauges still does not work. Still trying to figure out where that signal is coming from.

Saturday I hooked up all the lights for a quick test, no problems there. Only thing that came to mind was I'd like all four lights to work as brake lights, rather then two. I think some diodes might make it possible to get the 4 lights to show brakes and the bottom two to show turn. I'll look into that this week. I also re-read the manual about the turn signal lights and found I had been miss reading it before and since we are going to use one light to indicate both turn signals, I'd had to use the 3 way provided in the kit. No big deal a cut and snipe and we are ready to go once Dad gets around to putting the indicator lights in the dash.

Most of the week was spent on mounting the wiring permanently to the frame. Rear harness was not a big deal, front took a bit of work just because of the extra wiring I had to run for the front fans, Power and switch ground for the thermostatic fan setup for the radiator fan (turns on the an automatically when the sensor read a certain temp, unless I switch it on manually). Mounted the Hella horns, man are they loud! they hang just off the side of the 4 inch frames under the radiator. Pity the fool that stands too close to them! Computer harness is in limbo until I get the driver side top foot box installed, kind of just hanging there. Dash harness is quite a mess also. Once I've got all the wiring all figured out I'll take a picture of it. (We took some picts today, but forgot the computer hookup at work!).

About 3 today is when we showed what almost 8 months of work was all about! After pushing her out side we jacked her up on her side so I could finalize the fuel line mounts to the frame, and took a few minutes to go over the car head to toe, looking for things that might move, or maybe we missed. Nothing. So I stepped back inside had a few sips of soda, relaxed a second and prepared for our first trip! Dad jumps in the drivers side and I, with fire extinguisher in hand, in the passenger side. Started right up! Glad since I had messed with so much wiring over the past few days. Then Dad puts her in gear and starts to roll her forward, he then realizes he can't quite see and puts it back in neutral. No seat! No problem, Since I have a bit linger legs I volunteer for the first run and we switch sides. Easy her in first, or rather pound her in first, New Tremecs are a B#@ch to put in gear! I start the heaving of the wheel to made the first turn toward the end of the driveway at about 1 mile per hour. Glad I've been working out, takes a bit of work to get the wheel to turn that slow! We get down the end of the driveway and lessons learned from my lowered Mustang, I take it at an angle to not scrape bottom. So I get her straight on the little dead end road and with no gas, I slowly let the clutch out all the way for the first time. Does she ever want to go, she's idling at about 1200 for now and by the time I let the clutch out I was already preparing for second, again no gas. Put her in second and give her just a touch. Dad gets a slight touch of whiplash! very touchy throttle. by now I'm slowing because an old lady is walking along the side of the road and I don't want to scare her as I go by, When she turned to look at what was coming up behind her she got a little startled. Guess I wood too if I saw this big Go-cart coming up the road. I did a slow and painful 180 and headed back home. again reaching second quickly. So as I start to bring her up the drive way I lean a bit forward to see the edge, and as my butt friction is not enough I slide back and the clutch follows, Made a hell of a run up the driveway I'll tell ya! scrapped the bottom of the lower control arms on the way up. We figured we might have to cut the sway bar mounts on them anyway so no harm done!

We step out and get one of the seats out of the ox and place it in the driver seat to help Dad. He says it's great and we are back out. Same thing, but this time I watch from the passenger floor, Those new tires pick up and lot of little rocks. Got to watch the little drive shaft moving right along and got my first bug in the face! So cool! Dad did basically the same route and with less grinding on the way back up the drive way! Shut her off and Dad was the first causality of the hot pipes. Will kids ever learn!

So we cleaned up our mess outside and Dad says let put her back in the garage, we are done. So I assume the push positions and he reminds me, it runs, lets stop pushing it ever where. Good point, so I jump back in and turn her around and back her in to her spot for the first time!

We also had a hopeful future Cobra owner stop by with his family this weekend. The Chamberlains were a joy to have visit and hope to have them stop by again. It was a shame I didn't tell him today, I might have made more of a sales pitch if I could have taken him for a spin!

What a day! What fun! We finally get to see it all work. Over the next week or so we plan on hooking up the rest of the gauges and switches, call up Mike Mack and see if he can take our Cobra two weeks from now and see if we can get her all painted! I hope to get the pictures up in the next day or two and let you know when the painting will begin. We are looking into getting an in-closed trailer  for her over the next few months for transport and such.

Have I said recently how great this is? If not I'm going to say it now ... This is SOOO GREAT!!

August 22
Oh the fun!  I've finished hooking up all the switches and wires are all run, except the shift light, still figuring out how I want to hook it up. Hooked up the Air meter finally with a nice bracket.

Also read a little into the wiper setup. Made me quite angry! I had placed the FMU, TAD, TAD and  ??? something or other, right in the way of the wiper motor! I thought it was smaller, and with out much though into it, I though it might reside on the inside of the fire wall, what a doofus! So I removed them off the fire wall, drilled the holes for the motor, and re-attached the stuff in new places. So what do I do with these extra 4+ holes you ask? Open them up to fit a 1/8 rivet and rivet them in! Don't tell anyone they are of no use, looks like they are there for a purpose.

I Picked up the wrong adapter for the camera, hope to get these pictures off the camera tomorrow. Only a few weeks and she's off to be painted!
